MASTERING SOUND AND VISION — INDIVIDUAL VOLUME
VOLUME III

The Audio Laboratory

How systems work — proven at home.

A one-decibel increase can make a recording sound clearer, fuller and more convincing — with the tonal balance completely unchanged. You are hearing loudness, not quality, and a concealed trial proves it in minutes. Moving a listening chair twenty centimetres can outperform hours of equalisation, because it changes the actual acoustic problem rather than correcting around it. And a listener who reports a confident, repeatable preference between two identical settings hasn’t found a real difference — they’ve found the exact reason blind testing exists.

This volume runs twenty structured experiments, conducted at home with an ordinary system: establishing a documented reference before anything is changed, isolating the phantom centre, mapping standing waves by ear and by measurement, testing whether a height channel is actually audible, verifying microphone placement, and running genuine concealed comparisons instead of sighted opinion. Each laboratory changes one variable, records what was heard against what was measured, and ends in a decision rather than an impression.

It is an experiment book, not a second setup manual. Placement, calibration and correction belong to Volume II, Practical Optimisation; a persistent fault uncovered along the way belongs to Volume VII, The Audio Troubleshooting Guide. What this volume gives instead is the discipline to find out for yourself — so that agreement or disagreement between what you hear and what you measure becomes a documented result, not a lingering impression.
