MASTERING SOUND AND VISION — INDIVIDUAL VOLUME
VOLUME VI

Real Rooms, Real Systems

How to set up real systems on evidence.

An owner blames thin bass and a hard, fatiguing sound on an under-powered amplifier, spends significantly on a far more capable replacement, and the dissatisfaction returns within weeks — because the actual cause was a seat sitting in a bass cancellation and a sidewall throwing back a strong early reflection, neither one related to amplifier power at all. A living room with a solid wall on one side and an open archway on the other doesn’t need its two sides made to look alike; it needs its two loudspeaker-to-listener paths made equal — a different, and far more solvable, problem.

This volume is a casebook, not a summary of the five that come before it: complete design studies, from a small-room stereo system to a dedicated reference cinema, each one following a real brief through room reading, acoustic mapping, budgeting by actual bottleneck, installation and a documented commissioning result. It closes with the hardest cases — genuine accessibility needs, night-time volume limits, an upgrade that failed and exactly why, and a proper handover once a system is actually finished.

Every case assumes the underlying method rather than re-teaching it: stereo theory and system synthesis belong to Volume V, complete cinema design to Volume IV, and the full placement, measurement and correction method to Volume II. What this volume adds is what those can’t show in the abstract — how a sound method actually survives an off-centre fireplace, a shared living room, a fixed budget and a household that just wants to press play.
